Obituary

Betty E. (Calhoon) Blackburn was born December 29, 1930 in Norfolk, Virginia to Lela E. (Hoyle) and James L. Calhoon and went to be with the Lord the morning of October 17, 2018 - surrounded by family. Her faith in God led her through the good times and the challenging. During recent months she frequently shared with family and friends that God had blessed her in ways too numerous to count. Her strong faith guided her life and the way they raised their children. Betty moved to Oklahoma in the late 1950's and married H.B. Blackburn October 31, 1959. She began her career in Oklahoma working to establish the OSU Hemophilia Dog Colonies to learn more about the disease. She then worked with Dr. Nazih Zuhdi as he pioneered open heart surgery techniques. Later in her career Betty worked and taught hematology at Oklahoma Memorial Hospital (now OU Medical Center) where she retired after more than 25 years in January 1993. She recently had the opportunity to reconnect with her hematology and lab friends for a luncheon in her honor. Betty and H.B. were blessed with six children, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Betty spent the early years of their marriage working, chasing six kids through the sports and vacationing back to Virginia to see her mother and visiting the ocean. After retirement she and "Blackie" loaded up the motorhome and burned up the highways for the next 25 years where they saw sights across the United States. The last few months they settled back in Moore, so they could spend more time with their kids, grandkids and lifelong friends. Betty is proceeded in death by her parents, her twin brother James L., grandson Jarrod Michael. She is survived by her loving husband Hubert of the home, and children - Pam Divine and husband Jerry (Moore), Susan Jones and husband Gary (Oklahoma City), Michael Blackburn and wife Sue (Tulsa), Mary Chartney and husband Glenn (Harrah), Laura Clay and husband Cecil (Oklahoma City), Patricia Householder and husband Michael (Everywhere), and bonus daughter Laurel Darrow and husband Joe (Oklahoma City). Grandchildren - Rebecca, Sandi, Kendal, Ashley, Ben, Sam, Michael, Daniel, Robin, Amanda and Justin and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held October 27th at 10:00 at LifeChurch 2916 S. Telephone Road, Moore, OK.
