Obituary

Suzy Ackerman Deatherage, age 63 of Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024. Born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on November 1, 1960, Suzy was the daughter of Al Ackerman and La Berta Ackerman. Suzy grew up in Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma where her father was a banker, and her mother was a math teacher. She graduated from Fort Cobb High School in 1978. She attended Southwestern State University and Seminole College and earned an Associate's degree in Math. Suzy managed New Image Boutique in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She also worked at Dillard's and UPS. In 1979, while attending Southwestern University, she met and fell in love with a football player, Mark Deatherage. They married on November 21, 1980. Mark spent time in the oil field. He later went back to college and got a degree in Occupational Therapy and spent 25 years as an occupational therapist and rehabilitation director. Suzy was an accomplished vocalist and enjoyed playing the acoustic guitar. She had a unique talent for decorating and her Christmas trees were always a work of art. She had a special place in her heart for Simon, her pet schnauzer. Suzy was preceded in death by her parents Al and La Berta Ackerman, and brother-in-law Larry Megert. Suzy's radiant personality and love of life made her a favorite of friends and family. Suzy is survived by her husband of 43 years Mark Deatherage, her sister, Diann Megert from Walters, Oklahoma, her brother-in-law Ron Deatherage and sister-in-law Joy Deatherage from Tecumseh, Oklahoma, special cousin Jan Barrick and her husband Jerry Plant from Oklahoma City. She is also survived by her chosen family, Lonnie and Kim Holly from Shawnee Oklahoma, Johnny and Tish Lewis from Shawnee and lifelong friend Joe Frank from Fort Cobb. She would like to give special thanks to Liberty Drug- Brian Harrison and staff, Carnegie, Oklahoma, Stephen Cancer Center- Dr. Christine Washington and staff Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the health care profession and to Dr. Heather Koch DDS and staff from Hinton, Oklahoma for her "Goodbye smile". Suzy's Celebration of Life will be October 26, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at 10071 State HWY 9, Fort Cobb, Oklahoma.
