Obituary

Vera Jean Benson, 77, entered this life on November 23, 1948, in Tom, Oklahoma, and entered into eternal rest on February 14, 2026, in Frisco, Texas.

Vera was a faithful and devoted Christian woman whose quiet strength and steady faith guided her throughout her life. She faithfully read her Bible and attended churches throughout Oklahoma City, most notably serving at Evangelistic Baptist Church of Christ. There, she generously shared her beautiful gift for floral design, creating altar arrangements that blessed the congregation for many years.

Though soft-spoken and not often one to pray aloud, Vera deeply believed in the power of prayer. Her faith was sincere and unwavering. She admired her brother's talent in gospel music and found great joy in listening to quartet worship music, allowing its harmonies to uplift her spirit.

Born in Tom, Oklahoma, Vera treasured her childhood memories. She fondly remembered watching television with her father, making mud cakes in her mother's old pots, and enjoying vanilla wafers—earning her the sweet nickname "Cookie." She cherished her time spent with her siblings and carried those loving memories with her throughout her life.

Vera lived most of her life in Oklahoma City, where she built a meaningful career, raised her family, and formed lasting friendships. She had a passion for lifelong learning and firmly believed that a great educator should never stop growing. Her commitment to excellence led her to earn CDA Council recognition and a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Oklahoma. She dedicated more than 30 years to early childhood education through various Head Start programs. Vera began her career at Avery Head Start, where her love for teaching blossomed as she nurtured the vibrant and curious minds of preschool children. Her dedication and leadership within the Sunbeam Family Services system eventually led her to serve as Director at Steed Head Start, where she faithfully remained until her retirement. Her lasting impact continues in the many children, families, and colleagues whose lives she touched.

Outside of her professional life, Vera found joy in simple pleasures. She loved music and enjoyed listening to her favorite songs and watching shows like The Voice. She delighted in cheering on the Oklahoma City Thunder, watching basketball games, drawing, dancing, and expressing her creativity through floral arrangements.

Vera was also an avid thrifter, always on the lookout for unique treasures. From stylish purses to delicate china and rare decorative finds, she delighted in discovering special pieces and sharing her finds with those she loved. She enjoyed playing bingo and was always thrilled by a good bargain.

In her final year, Vera spent time in New York enjoying peaceful walks near local parks and indulging in regular hair and nail appointments. Her final months were spent in Texas, enjoying television much as she had in earlier years and continuing to cheer on her beloved Thunder.

Vera Jean Benson will be remembered for her gentle spirit, steadfast faith, creative gifts, and her unwavering dedication to children and education. Her life was a quiet testimony of service, love, and devotion. She leaves behind a legacy of faith and compassion that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
