Evelyn Lavon Williams entered this world on June 26, 1940 as the second child born to James Williams Sr. and Arletha Williams (Maxwell). She accepted the Lord at a very early age. As a member of the Duffy Chapel Baptist Church in Bristow, Oklahoma, the Lord began to "use" her as she displayed a gift for public speaking. Evelyn was groomed to compete nationally in oratorical contests in various places, most notably in Washington D.C. She loved to serve others and help in any way that she could.
Later, Evelyn met Wendell R. Pitre on a "blind date" and their lives became intertwined forever. Soon after, they married and began a family. This union produced seven children- 5 boys and 2 girls. In 1963, this family moved to Oklahoma City.
Evelyn became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and served in several hospitals, most notably St. Anthony's Hospital in downtown OKC. from where she later retired.
As a child of God, she worked in various capacities throughout the East Zion district as a member of St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church under Dr. W.K. Jackson and later at Faith Memorial Baptist Church under Dr. Morris A. Curry. In 1983, Reverend W.R. and Sister Evelyn Pitre were installed as Pastor and First Lady of the First Baptist Church of Luther, Oklahoma. They faithfully served in these capacities for 38 years, before passing the mantel of leadership to Reverend Jack and Sister Brenda Mitchell in 2021.
After a lengthy illness, Evelyn departed this life on October 7, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Williams Jr. of Bristow, Ok., her sister, Betty Jean Lyday of Dallas, TX., her Uncle Tom Maxwell of Bristow, Ok.; cousin Elaine Maxwell of Bristow, Ok., and son James Pitre (Ollie Marie) of Midwest City, Ok.
